Singing With the Stars

One of the more popular television shows in past years has been “Dancing with the Stars.”  Famous people are paired with professional dancers in a series of competitions for a shot for glory.

I haven’t watched the show much – though I must admit I had to check out how Jerry Rice and Mr. T did. Oh…and Jerry Springer (YEESH!).

Whether you’re a fan of “Dancing with the Stars” or not, chances are that you’ll never be able to join the show.  But the odds are good that you could participate in a different sort of display: “Singing with the Stars.”

Not a TV show – none exists with that title.  And I’m not talking about joining a celebrity here.

I’m referring to literal stars…and how you can join them in song.  Let me explain.

The Song of Creation

An Italian astronomer by the name of Fiorella Terenze, professor of physics and astronomy at Florida International University, has spent three decades capturing the strange, spooky symphony of the cosmos.  She has discovered that, quite literally, the stars sing!

Using computer music software, Terenze has processed the radio waves sent out by the stars in our galaxy into a tune, albeit not always something in 4/4 time.  She refers to it as “acoustic astronomy.”

Fascinating, eh?  It’s clear that the heavenly bodies don’t meander through space in silence.  They combine to create a celestial symphony.

David was no astronomer, but somehow he captured this in Psalm 19.

The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they reveal knowledge.

They have no speech, they use no words;
no sound is heard from them.

Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.

Psalm 19:1-4

He echoed this thought on another occasion.

Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;
let the sea resound, and all that is in it.

Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them;
let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.

Psalm 96:11-12

Music from the natural order.  While the wavelengths and frequencies of the praise offered may not be heard by human ears, it exists nonetheless.  And I have to believe it brings pleasure to the Creator.

Your Song for the Creator

That being the case, can you imagine the joy it brings Him when the crown of His creation, humankind, joins in?  Even if all you can muster is a joyful noise, I have to think it blesses Him.

Can you imagine the joy it brings God when the crown of His creation, humankind, joins in the celestial symphony?  Even if all you can muster is a joyful noise, it blesses Him.

Let me encourage you to sing with the stars throughout your week.  Lift your voice as you’re driving in your car.  Search out a praise song on your computer (I have enjoyed some “golden oldies” lately.)  And don’t remain silent when you gather with others to worship.

You may not ever get applause from the crowd, but you might well receive an ovation from an audience of One.

Prayer

Lord, I marvel at how creation consistently offers praise to You.  Yet I must admit that all too often I’m slow to join the chorus.  Remind me of how the very stars sing.  And of how it pleases You when I sing with them.
